These are images of the Aral Sea from 1989 and in 2003.  It was once the fourth-largest saltwater lake in the world, straddling the border between the former Soviet republics of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
In the 1960’s, a Soviet program to irrigate cotton fields began diverting river water away from the Aral Sea; as a result, the lake has been reduced by 90% in size, turning it into a virtual desert, dotted with remains of rotting ships.  “It is clearly one of the worst disasters, environmental disasters of the world,” said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon during a visit; he called on the countries’ leaders to come up with solution to at least partially repair the damage.

Nice foresight there.
